BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Today is National Mathematics Day which is celebrated after birthday of Srinivasa Ramanujana. But you will be surprised to know that I have found that all the maths tutorials on Youtube about Ramanujan's Magic Square are WRONG (let me know if you find right one). You may have heard that Sanskrit is the best language for computer but may not know how to apply it. And last week every news channel was talking about the achievement of Rishi Atul Rajpopat, a Cambridge Ph.D. student who has solved a centuries-old puzzle of Sanskrit that was taught by Panini (our ancient genius). In this post, today on National Mathematics Day of India I'm sharing how it will create a huge impact on Computer Science especially computer programming language and artificial intelligence. Also, why these are reasons for our company's name ‘Yantriksh’ is in Sanskrit?
To start with, let's get back to 400 BC when one of ancestor was taken a responsibility to create a language name ‘Sanskrit’ which is also known as ‘Language of God’. Every Indian ancient scriptures are written Sanskrit language also there are several references about Sanskrit as a root of many languages of other countries like Spain, French, German, etc. 50% of the world is rooted from Indo-European language.
To understand the role of Sanskrit in modern world, it is very important to understand how languages are created? The most part while creating a language is to where to start, how to use words and create a meaning and understandable sentence. It is mentioned that Lord Shiva has guided Rishi Panini to how to get started with Sanskrit which is known as Shiva Sutra. In different chapters that deals with different parts of building a language, Astadhyayi (eighth chapter) is the chapter of grammar and it is the most complex chapter in which one rule was misinterpreted which was creating exceptions and puzzled us from last 2500 years. And just because this rule, all the Sanskrit scholars have written wrong interpretation of Panini's grammar in last 2500 years by carrying common mistake.
Now Rajpopat at Cambridge University who was doing Ph.D. has finally found out the right algorithm for that one rule which do not create any exceptions. This is a historical milestone achieved that will improve our understanding of Sanskrit scriptures like Vedas as well as make it easy for anyone to learn Sanskrit. This means we have found a pure algorithm that can help a computer to understand a language without caring about exceptions.
Let's understand how computer programming languages are developed and how it will be gamechanger if we will use Sanskrit. Basically, in the subject Theory of Computation of Computer Science, we learn about how we design a rules for computer to understand our instructions sets. We call it ‘automata’ which creates rules for computer like grammar for language. Automata play very important role in the theory of computation, compiler construction, artificial intelligence, parsing and formal verification. With the help Sanskrit language and its Astadhyayi, we can tech this to the computer that will help computer to understand us more clearly while interacting them with programming languages, artificial intelligence, etc.
So, let's think about in 400 BC there was limited tools and resources but still Rishi Panini has given us something that is contributing in the modern world and its technologies. Now I want to take you to the British colonial period when Srinivasa Ayengar Ramanujan was called divine mathematician and known as ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’. He was a in maths genius who were able to solve college maths while studying in class 7th. His life was full of challenges where his family was facing poverty and at other side he was not interested in other subjects. He was so poor that he was not able to afford pen and papers so he were used to chalks and slate to practice his maths and research. He was awarded by Mathematics Prize and offered scholarship in the college but just because was not interested in other subjects, in class 11th he passed maths but failed in other subject due to which his scholarship was cancelled. Later he tried his best but always failed in other subjects so he finally dropped out. He started working as a clerk.
While working as a clerk, a British Officer was found his research notes and he was quite impressed with it. So he given promoted him and given him freedom to continue his research. Later Ramanujan sent his research to a professor name J H Hardy from Cambridge University who recognizes Ramnujan's genius. The professor invited him to the university but again it was not in the religious practice to cross the oceans due to which her mother denied her from going to the university. Later her mother was convinced and Ramanujan's went to the university where he created his identity in international scholars and awarded by Bachelor of Science from Cambridge University. At the end, he was awarded by FRS (Fellow of Royal Society), the most prestigious award given to someone after substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science, and medical science. But because he was vegetarian, it was challenging for him to find proper diet and died due to tuberculosis after returning from Britain.
Every time when it was asked to Ramanujan that how he form able to such complex maths then he were used to tell that Goddess (Isht Devi Namgiri) teach him in his dreams. His most famous quote is, “An equation means nothing to me unless it expresses a thought of God.” In modern world, his Mock Theta was used to solve the puzzles of black hole theory. Also he has influenced many areas of mathematics like string theory, moonshine, etc. Today he is known as the man who knew infinity because 60% of his contribution in mathematics was dedicated to infinite series formulas.
This is how Cambridge has helped us to recognize the talent of India who uncovered the most valuable knowledge and culture of India. In India, there are also people and universities that recognizes the talent but finding them is itself challenging due to which many talents in our country has been lost and we are losing them everyday. Let's see if the new Education Policy of India would help or not. So, when you find anyone lost in his own world obsessed with any subject then try supporting them that would help them to connect their world with ours and who knows that it would as beautiful as Panini's Sanskrit or Ramanujan's formulas.
At last, the name of our company is in Sanskrit because we are a computer and cybernetics company and apply several algorithms from Sanskrit to communicate and control computers and apply mathematics to solve real life problems. The word ‘Yantriksh’ is an amalgam of the words ‘Yantra’, ‘Yantrik’ and ‘Antriksh’ which means ‘Device’, ‘Mechanist’, and ‘Space’ respectively.
